So the pic i have in the op is a can transistor?

[Edit] nope just found it on digi key. It's a solid shell aluminium capacitor. [/edit]

I honestly dont know.
I've seen them before but it's beyond my level of repair work.
Looks like the case is cast aluminum. Stick a magnet on the edge by one of the screw holes. If it sticks cbm2/3
If not Al #2
;)

This matches so it probably is. http://www.datasheetarchive.com/D627+transistor-datasheet.html

As far as specifics i simply test contact points. If something is dead i look up the part swap it out and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I'm not an electrician and my strong point is software not hardware. Sorry

Those switches are always atleast copper. Usually nickel or silver and on rare occasion gold or other metals.

Yes as in the charge. I use a custom two prong cable made from an old voltage tester (big heavy insulation) and a single splice with a resistor and ground out to a copper Water pipe.

Are there better ways... sure. But this is what I'm comfortable with and it's quick and easy.

I've had camera flash caps start fires (why most places don't take cameras caps and batteries)
And a microwave capacitor, those nice giant shiny aluminium ones the size of a cell phone, nearly killed me.

I still don't breakdown microwave ovens. ;)

i sell those giant caps on ebay. 10 bucks average. Ones from air conditioners go quick.

Which caps do you decide to drain and others not?

Anything over an amp is dangerous and i drain those. Also anything over a few thousands volts because they make large sparks and blinding flashes if they short. But draining is different from ruining... you can drain and resell them.
I used to sell the ones from microwave ovens. They run $5-10 at goodwill and I'd get 5-15+ for the capacitors alone on ebay. Plus other parts and scrap.
