i always wondered why a cd dvd rom board was equal or even worth more than a large socket mobo....just the size alone you would think there are more gold pins and ic's in a mobo...of course the dvd roms are easier to ship because they are smaller...thanks

It's all about the total amount of each type of material. Most cd/dvd boards have more gold platinum and palladium. More copper. More nickel. Just laws of averages.

^^ This

Think of your standard motherboard... how many times do you see large capacitors, or copper coils, or large plastic sockets, even empty board space... All that cuts into the 'valuable metals/total weight ratios'. Most CD/DVD boards are miniaturized with little extraneous elements... even more so for hard drive logic boards. As the components shrink, they have to be higher performance which usually translates to more valuable metals as well :)

thanks for your replies...i was actually thinking board vs board but it would take several cd roms to equal a mobo in weight so you really are getting more bang for your buck weight wise...even more so with hard drive boards which are even lighter but a pound worth you really do get less waste and more ic and gold pins...i have seen the light
