Am looking at a few towers. Some have I 5 quadcore processors, and the pics on the internet does not clearly show pins, so I am assuming it is pinless for scrap purposes? However, there seems to be a fair market even for untested on ebay.

Didn't want any of you bidding against me so I didn't put in any particulars yesterday. There were approximately 200 towers, mostly Dell OptiPlex 790, with about 100 of them Optiplex 790 SFF, in pallets of 33 or 27. There were smaller lots of 18 each of the Dell 790 towers.
In previous auctions, the similar computers had no harddrive and some even more stripped. A couple months ago, someone had paid several hundred for what amounted to empty shells, so pre-bidders were leery this go-round. I had checked on the lots in person, and noted that most or all were complete with harddrive and at least a couple sticks of memory. I max bid most lots at $2 per tower, as I could not be online to bid live if outbid.
Do I need to say it? I was outbid. The 790 SFF went for $3 to $5 per unit. The three pallets of 18 OptiPlex 790 went for $2.50 more per pallet than my max bid. Of course, had I been able to bid live, I probably still would have lost out, as I would not have gone over $3 per tower. But then again, I possibly could have gotten 54 complete towers for less than $120.
There were several gaylords of assorted boxes and some electronics and electrical, etc, that went for just a few dollars more than my max prebid. The good news is I did manage to snag 17 towers for $27.
This time, I intend to record exactly how much scrap value is in each one...previously Lost had said that a tower buy was good at 4 to 5 each, but I think those were of older models with gold pin CPUs and large socket MB.
So there you have it: Another lesson from Meowpher, on How to Quickly Amass Poverty . Afraid to lose a little, you may never win big. Wait a minute. I think I am confusing scrapping with playing the stock market and buying lottery tickets. I have always said the stock market is the second fastest known way to quickly amass poverty, behind only the lottery.
Anyone care to guess what the final scrap value of 17 assorted towers will be, using Boardsort payouts, although I will sell the steel locally, since I am hundreds of miles away.

I'm assuming you know a little bit about what you are buying. I base my bids mostly as if I were hauling it across the scales for shred steel, as most of this computer stuff is county or city surplus, obsolete. Some of these units had windows vista, and XP. Occasionally I do manage to find something in a lot that is worth the hassle of ebaying, like a new sealed powersupply for networking equipment, etc. but most is stripped as soon as feasible.

Honestly I know very little about computers as far as re-furbishing them or selling parts out of them. This lot I decided gambling on, because of the hand held scanners. Those work, they just didn’t work for Brazoria county. Boardsort now buys those with out the battery as cell phones without batteries. Needles to say I have 8 hour round trip ahead of me (vacation day).

Scanners can be across the board on retail. From under $5 to many hundreds.

So if they work you may want to put some effort into looking them up.

17 towers.
Wild guess having no idea what you bought and not having done it in a while myself.
Pre 1998 $50+
1998 or later Around $30-$50
Just pure scrap.

Now when you finish you can tell me how right or wrong my wild guess is.

Knowing the basics that I know I’ll pay out heavy for anything Pentium/K6 era or earlier. Salvage is worth the risk to me.
A working full tower fully loaded 386 system can flip for $50+ alone. 8080s, especially the skinny tower workstations, always pass $100 (all things included) if they turn on.

Hoping another gamble pay's off here lol.
The Total was $179.51 that's tax and convenience fee (credit card fee).

The computers are mostly Dell's:
Optiplex 745, 755, 760, 780, & 7010
Lap top's are Dell Latitude 5510, E5510, E5570 & E5530 & Inspiron 1300 & 1501
Toshiba Satellite 2250CDT

Scanners Socket Mobile CX2870-1409 bluetooth

Most computers are reported as "broken" a few are reported as "unknown" and afew are reported as "working"
All are saying the HDD's have been removed or erased.
Just a quick look at the scanners they run $150 to well over $300 each.
