Is it ok to take off tantalum capacitors and crystal oscillators?
I have a fascination with them and seeing how many I can collect.

It downgrades the board.

The only crystal oscillators worth keeping are the big socketed one IMO

Ta caps aren't that common on midgrade boards but they're out there, I have an ounce or two from brown boards, at least more plentiful than trimmable gold fingers on periph.

If you're desoldering Ta caps from periph boards your better off dropping the desold'ed boards at a local yard that doesn't sort boards tightly, you could probably take the Ta and IC chips and still sell the rest of board for 50-75¢ /lb

That's why it's important to learn how every yard you'd ever consider driving to treats you, so you know where your best taking that specific,

Ex. I have one yard near me that buys boards at low mid or high grade, at 7, 50 or 95¢ a lb

Because of their "understanding" of board grading they have all kinds of wacky ideas about what goes where, anything green, even stripped bare, gets ¢50, and color mobos and those little edge strips from LCDs get ¢95, if I need to drop some material locally for the storage rent or have some material I want to depopulate this is how I handle it

Every company has its quirks. Chris has a large organisation and his pricing is based on bulk presorting averages.
Eg 500 gold finger cards are $X.YY
500 rainbow motherboards are $X.YY
Any variation (depop) is cast aside into a lower bin. Anyone who has scraped more than a few years at more than a few places will find inconsistencies.
I know a place that will pay $1.10 (last week) for any green board. Regardless of what it is. Be it the board from a tube TV or a cell phone. I literally told them at one point how ludicrous their classing was. They said that’s what their buyer pays based on so they pass the stupidity on to our benefit. In reality it does work out value wise.
Figure 100lbs of green fibre CPUs in with 100lbs of power supply boards. You see how it can average out that way.
