Update on a losing proposition: It took ages but I almost made wages. Years ago, I wondered why it is that some people live comfortably on an average wage, while others are always broke while making much larger income. Finally, I read something that put it all in perspective: It isn't how much money you make: it is how much you have left when you stop spending.
As I mentioned, the scrap yard refused to take the fluorescent light fixtures with the ballast still in them, so instead of making a trip and selling them for shred steel, I had to take them back and proceed with stripping. Took most of a no-hurry day, but came out a little better money wise. Paid ten bucks plus tax plust 15% buyers premium, so the four pallets of fixtures cost about $14. Across the scales as is would have brought slightly over $100. Stripping them netted me $90 for steel, $20 for 400 pounds of electronic ballast ( just about the same return I would have gotten for the lowgrade board if prepared) $60 for #2 insulated wire, and one hundred pounds, or 400 pieces of decorative v groove aluminum reflectors for decorative projects or roofing the dog house. Not much money for the time involved, but a fellow can't have four pallets of junk littering the driveway,. Git 'er gone, is my motto, and make money on the next deal.
