Does Boardsort buy VCR’s as is above shred rate, if so, what is the price per pound? If they do, what category do they go under? I couldn’t find any category that they would fit under properly. Thanks!

It would be the lowest level of breakdown.
But you are fairly well set to sell on ebay or social sites. Even doa they regularly run $20 or so, plus shipping.

Probably not. Inside there is a low grade board (with a few ICs), some copper from the transformers, inductors, and motors, and some steel and plastic. VCRs don't really have much scrap value.

The read heads, are the real value in scrapping a player. Aluminium and cobalt.
Still not much. A 4 head player will give you $2-$5 from the heads to a large sort scrap yard.

Ok, thanks!

I have pulled them apart before, but I don’t quite feel like pulling them apart but I think I probably will at some point. I know there is not much in them.

If you do, the heads are the way to go. Pop them in half too. If you get cobalt rings you’ve got good cash for nothing more than 2 or 3 minutes of quick de-lidding. Cobalt sits at 4.75-6.75 consumer value right now.

I would definitely test them for resale, rather than scrap out.
I was (my company) recently at a retro gaming expo and we brought along some (5 pallets worth) of tested PC's ranging in age as well as about 30 or so VCR's/combo units to get a feel for people's interests. We sold all of them. You might not be able to get Long Island money, but you for sure should be able to nab 20-30 bucks on the low side, more if you have a remote/original packaging.
They stopped coming off the assembly line, I want to say in 2007/2008, but everyone still has VHS in their home. The demand will only increase in time as people want to watch their tapes again.

Big huge thumbs up. And that’s the low end. Anything before the mid-90s with manual tracking will fetch much more when better than average condition.

Btw
The last consumer VHS player left the assembly line in 2008. An SVHS deck.
The last DVHS player was
Manufactured in 2014. David’s, a small regional outfit in Hong Kong, hand made his last player in 2020 only cut off because of covid supply issues.
The scene stays alive today DIY machines. Kits will set you back over $100 but you can build an SVHS for about $80 part by part.
Check out hackaday for VHS and every other type of strange and weird project.

I kept a few helical scan heads from VCRs and camcorders I've disassembled, not knowing what to do with them. Some of them I've taken off the motor, but how can I sell the cobalt that's in them?

Cobalt is rare in consumer equipment. It tends to be found in older VHS heads and high end machines, including SVHS and DVHS/DTheater decks. Beta heads generally used it as well.

Most large steel buyers will have a class for cobalt as well. It’s common in industrial and medical scrap. Along with catalytic converters.
Some glass companies will buy larger amounts as well for making cobalt glassware.
