Is there gold on the pins and if so how do I tell what is gold or tin?

All USB adaptors that comply with the USB specification have gold pins.
About the only place you find anything else is the 25 cent cables that come in 500 packs from China or central Africa. (Those are rarely allowed to make it past customs).
