Does removing a heatsink from a mid grade board knock it down to low grade?

At midgrade you may get a better rate for the aluminium from a local yard. Also anything lower than peripheral rate isn’t going to be hurt or helped by removing anything

Without a photo I cannot help much with what it would be without a heatsink. Potentially it could be better or still midgrade. Depends on the board.

Yep big old distributor boards. Hack away and grab that aluminium.
As long as they’re green on both sides you’re still at midgrade.

As long as there’s reasonable IC chips left it stays midgrade.
However as I’ve said before with midgrade and low grade stuff I just strip them bare. I’m not close enough to send these classes to boardsort and I get 1c-6c per lb locally for the boards when they’re totally bare. The more I take off the higher I get.
They buy them as “fill” and I know this stuff get sold to the local quarries but I’ve no idea what they do with them after that.

Besides when you start pulling from mid/low to the point where you’re removing that much may as well keep going. Chris has a fairly high rate for clean ICs so no reason to not pick them off too.
Boardsort doesn’t buy totally bare boards though so make sure you’r local yard will buy them before you get to that point.

Thanks - my local yard that I take the metals to doesn't buy e-scrap. and frankly I'm having a hard time finding someone local who does...they all seem to be in the "free service" vein so maybe I'm not searching properly? I don't have enough volume to break down every little IC but I came across four totes full of tv boards - some worth ebaying some worth scrapping...just trying to maximize my $$ without getting ridiculous on the time investment.
