As with everything, a little common sense can go a long way.

If you are sticking with standard computer electronics then you will find things are fairly people friendly assuming you are not trying to tear apart a CRT monitor because those can get nasty quick. Otherwise, the items found inside a PC computer are safe to handle.

Battery backup units can be dangerous. Use extreme caution when tearing these apart. The battery inside is usually charged and it will create a good zap and possibly a fire.

Speaking of batteries, Lithium Ion laptop batteries are the most dangerous item we handle. Each battery is like an M-80 (powerful firework) and it does not take much to make one explode. Never allow the battery to short out or allow the leads to make contact with another battery. They WILL explode. It has happened in our warehouse. We still have the burn/impact holes in the ceiling insulation to remind us. That is why we require every battery we buy to have the contacts taped over.

Once you get away from the computer scrap and get into industrial electronics then you need to be more careful. Materials like lead, mercury and PCBs are commonly found in industrial scrap. If you are not practiced in identifying and managing these toxic wastes, its best to just avoid them.
