I have a number of what I believe are mid quality and a few low quality boards that I had a question about. The boards in question generaly pretain to boards from power supplies (low grade) and other boards with a few bulky componets, but would probably classify as mid grade as is.

If I were to remove large items, such as solderd transformers and large capacitors, from the low and/or mid grade boards; would you take these 'processed' boards for a higher price? If so, is the value any less for broken boards?

Thanks!

Removing components will not upgrade the quality of the board. Usually, removing something will downgrade a board or reduce the weight of the board itself. Take a floppy drive board for example. Even though the board would be peripheral grade because of the connector pins, removing them downgrades the board to low grade.

If you are removing stuff from power supply boards, only remove items that you can sell separately and get more money from with little effort involved in recovery. Usually these are limited to the aluminum heat sinks and magnetic inducers or transformers where the copper is exposed. Don't waste time recovering the copper from the power supply transformers that are covered in tape. All the ones I've seen have more tape than copper worth recovering. Toss those with your transformers/CBMs and sell to your local scrap yard.

Okay, thanks. Also, does boardsort.com take gold plated laser modules? I'm starting to get a few more of these every day and I'm not quite sure who takes them, or what they are worth.

Image
A: Laser Module
B: Connectors pins (occasionaly fall off, would be included with A)
C: Laser Detector, judging by the path of the laser. (Gold in a clear chip)

I'd assume C would just be classified as an IC chip and therefore would run $5/lb, but I was not sure about the modules if they even accept them at all, or if anyone takes them for that matter.

TheVintageTechGeek,

As you can imagine, figuring the actual value of those laser heads and the single pin can be challenging if not impossible. With that being said, I would be a buyer at $4 per pound which is our default "unknown" gold plated pin price.

Thanks for the look!
