I have started to pull parts from machines in order to sell and some the CPUs have the heat sink glued on them so well that they don't come off easily. I have tried a few different methods to loosen them but still ended with broken pieces. The CPUs in question are Motorola 68040. Would Boardsort still accept them as CPUs, or would they be counted as something else?

Thanks.

Here's a picture of one of the CPUs with the heatsink attached.

Thanks.

The 6k series generally fall into two categories to begin with. 486 class for the smaller ones with gold cap. Pentium gold cap for the larger ones with the gold cap.
In both cases the whole cou with a sink would fall into Motorola foreign gold cap. For the less common ones without the gold cap they go as Pentium Mac ceramic without a sink, and metal top with a sink.

Broken depends on multiple factors
If it’s fairly large pieces or just a few chips and the cpu is packed together and obviously what it was you’ll get whatever category it was before it broke.

Removing the cpu sink. Chris and others recommended boiling in water. Never tried that myself.
For big ones I’ll bend the fins and blast the sink with a heat gun on the fins.
For smaller ones I stick the sink inside the blower tube of a heat gun and hold it at an angle till the sink falls off. Easy peasy most of the times.

Thanks LostInLoDOS, that is very helpful. I also just read several of your posts in the Help Forum and got a lot of great information there. This post in particular should be pinned:

You’re welcome.
Think the reason we never stickied it was as it’s more a guide.
AMD, ibm, AT&T, And Motorola all have short duration runs that are totally off the wall. The gigantic IBM ceramic Multi chip carriers, those 5 or 6 inch long Motorola’s... AMD made ceramics with nickel caps AND ceramics with palladium and platinum caps, with gold or silver legs. I abandoned that thread when I was met with a platinum cap nickel leg PLASTIC z80 knockoff.
When in doubt ask. :)
