What's the rough value I can get out of a modern laptop?

Assume I just want to scrap and not refurb. Fully intact with battery HDD and working screen. On average what is the sum of componenta typically worth if I were to break down.

Purely as scrap? Modern being the last 2-5 years around $5-$10 depending on manufacturer and options.
Boutique and gaming laptops can exceed $20 easily and the gaming desktop replacements can go well beyond that with many telco class components.
Low end stuff will pull under $5 including netbooks and ultra portables which are excessively over priced.

Mac book air worked out to $6 in pure scrap rates. But jumped to $24 since I soldered the lcd panel for $20 off site.

Ok that's roughly was I was guesstimating but wasn't real sure. I think age on the ones I'm looking at might be closer to 8-10 years. Manufacturer specs have them weighing about 6lbs each so I obviously know their "whole" value but figured worth more in the long run broken apart -- again purely from a scrap perspective. I know there's more value in em overall but I ain't got time for these to hang around for months waiting to sell.

Some of them may have socketed CPUs or bus socket CPUs which would get green fibre without or with metal (respectively), so add $1 or two.

Again the real valuable laptop scrap is super high end stuff from falcon and such. All of which really is worth a restore/refurb and resale as they runs $400+ used. Even 10 years back.

If the contacts are gold send Chris an email with the model number and a photo. They’ve had on and off interest over the years. If the contacts are anything other than gold boardsort has no interest.

Some scrap yards will buy them as batteries. Others as shred scrap.
Some not at all.

So call your local yards and ask. They range from $0.10-$0.50 per pound on average for battery scrap. Specialist yards that focus on escrap May pay as much as $1 per lb depending on many factors.

Shred is hovering around $0.03 per lb nationally.

A little of topic, but could you explain why boardsort would only buy batteries that have gold contacts. Surely the small amount of gold in the contact cant offset the price they paid for the actual batteries and plastic casings. Presumably they have a buyer for the actual lithium/NiMH batteries once the gold contact is removed, so why not buy them regardless of whether the contact is gold or not?

I can't really get a clear view of the contacts even with a flashlight - the connector on the motherboard side was gold is that any indicator what's on the battery?

If they’re recessed between plastic tabs...?
Normally those are gold or silver, not nickel or copper. So shoot Chris an email with the model number and a photo to find out if he’s interested.
