Why are the 486DX2’s and 486DX4’s CPUs in the Pentium/MAC Ceramic categories and not in the “386/486” category? They look so similar – at least in the photos in the e-scrap gallery.

In addition, I have come across Intel i486-SX Fiber CPUs that are not ceramic. I am confused. Which bin do they go in? Pentium/Ceramic? Black Fiber? 386/486?

The chips have the markings “486” on them but they don’t always fall into the higher grade CPU.

Thanks for your answers in advance!

The best way to have us identify which grade your chips are is to post a photo of your 486 chips to the identification forum. Just to give you a heads-up, I've seen 486 chips soldered onto circuit boards and if they are removed, they would be considered regular IC chips. The 386/486 chips you see that are worth money here are the ones that socket into a motherboard and have tons of gold plating on the pins and inside the ceramic shell.

Thanks!

I also have some i486's that have heat sinks attached - I cannot get them off because they are super-glued on somehow.

Would Boardsort buy them at a reduced price?

I haven't seen anything that they would. Usually they ask that all heat sinks be removed before purchase. My suggestion would be to use best effort to pry the heat sink off.

Adirenzojr: hold a lighter for some 30 seconds on either of the sides, to make the glue lose its strength, then stick a screwdriver on that same spot between the ceramic and the heatsink and it should come off.

I use a grinder, on the metal, away from the ceramic but not too far, it loosens it and puts a little slot for a flat head screwdriver. Stick the screwdriver in and pound it off. If it breaks and leaves the middle, use a heat gun or a blow dryer, then hit it.

I finally tried the method with the lighter and flame.

Heat it up, and with a couple of whacks with a wood chisel wedged in the space between the ceramic and aluminum is all it took!
