Are they worth the hassle? What's the rough scrap value in one of these? Or the scrap value of a single DLP chip, roughly? I don't care about fresnel lenses...lots of videos out there showing how to scrap and what has value but I haven't seen anybody put a dollar figure to the scrap in a single tv so I don't know if it's worth the hassle.

Have a guy who has several and trying to figure out if I should pursue.

Depends on both the size, and type; as well as your situation and what you want to do.
If you're in a larger city, with lots of scrap yards and industry; and are willing to break it down and scrap most of everything; a 55" can fetch $5-$10 in scrap. A 100" is about double. The majority of your weight and value is in the transformer and wires, respectively.

If it's just the boardsort stuff and the rest goes as steel shred or even just free recycling then probably not. A DLP chip weighs nothing on it's own, a half ounce to a pound depending on the age, design, and material. The boards are mostly mid grade and a few peripheral.

Where is the DLP chip actually located in these giant tv's? In the back at the bottom where the other boards are? They are small and hard to find I know

You got it there. It’s always seated in an I/O board and usually opposite side to the largest power relay board. So follow the AC power cord to the board and then look anywhere else. Lol.
I know it’s not much help but I really don’t deal with many DLP units. LCD is most common followed by Plasma. Then Tube. DLP is the least common of monitors.
