HF is potentially deadly, and if it was venting, it would be smoking or shooting flames. https://youtu.be/08BoXebt_pk
Phone batteries can go the same way.

Woah! Nothing like that here. Thanks for the tips. I certainly want to be safe about this.

HF has an extremely acrid, bitter smell.... its hard to describe because you don't come across in at all... in vapor form its a white. if you were exposed to it it would be an experience you wouldn't forget IF you managed to survive it.

Possible HF exposure would be one of a list of concerns if one of these blow up on you... the electrolytes can contain some nasty things like phosphates, arsenic, or perchlorates... and don't forget the metallic lithium which itself is highly toxic. Basically, if the casing breaches, get the hell out of the area!

In short, dont mess with batteries :P

Lithium ion batteries don't contain metallic lithium, unless they are SEVERELY over discharged, but when they are over discharged to that degree, the bulge.
I'm happy with my NiMH batteries, much safer to use.

Sorry, should have said lithium compounds... Either way, contact with lithium is to be avoided.

On the subject of lithium ion batteries, how come laptop packs are worth a whole lot more than those from phones?

I could hazard a couple guesses, but they would only be guesses... it would be interesting to hear from boardsort on that one... Maybe I'll ask next time I'm up there :-)

Bigger gold contacts, more lithium
More everything in general.

You'll know hf when you smell it and at that point it's to late to do anything. Just run.

Yeah, guess your right, those 18650 cells if you want to use them, play it safe, or don't use them. I play it safe when using them, proper charger, multi meter for checking them. Still kind of afraid of them though.
