If I trim off the gold fingers does the board still go as back plane or is it down graded?

I don't quite understand your question, but if your backplane card has gold fingers on it, boardsort will take it as a fingered card. Trimming the fingers downgrades it to a backplane card and you will have a few grams of gold fingers.

Ya, I know what you mean. All depending on the backplane, if it has thin fingers on it, leave them on and get the finger card price. Some have real wide, heavy fingers on them, then its def worth trimming, sure you lose a buck or so a pound, but usually backplanes with fingers dont have much weight so you lose a buk or two to gain 4 or 5. Now good quality backplanes, the thick heavy ones, have big pin plugs for mobos or hard drives, whatever. Maybe thats why he didnt understand what you were asking, those kind are I'd imagine the category existing. I only really see fingered backplanes in normal consumer PCs, but the high grade stuff is in military gradetype stuff.
