6th reply down is a link to a time lapsed video refining gold hdd discs.
Basically it's like refining any other white gold or gold plated nickel
Process is the same as recovering gold from anything but you use a NaHCO3 mixture post gold extraction to recover the nickel as opposed to using a saline vinegar mixture to sort out copper.
I'm no chemist though. My limit to refining is Thus. Hcl mixture as posted by moose on YouTube.
melting gold slag to just above gold melt in a kiln and draining gold into a crucible sans slag.
And if wondering no i have not tried melting these myself. I have a yard that pays nickel rate for it
the general consensus is it's a loss incurring in small quantities.
Right now I don't even consider pins anymore let alone platters. i limit my "refining" to gold server boards low population cell boards gold wire isa/xt fingers and video game cartridges.

The pm is there (in theory) (cut one in half and polish the cut edge with toothpaste and a copper brush and have it gama scanned by a pawn shop/jeweler) but it costs too much to do it yourself.

It was a sticky but looks like it got moved... my last visit was in April. Lol.

File comment: What is worth refining. All of these are atleast one side fully gold flashed.

I tossed the topic id on top. They don't allow offsite linking.

Let me reiterate.
Do not refine. Find a buyer (local yard ebay... maybe email Chris to work out something if he's game [maybe/mayve not] )
There's no profit in doing a half dozen yourself. Not to mention the old game philosophy
Do it wrong and
go directly to jail (for any of a Baker's dozen regulations)
You will not pass go
You will not collect $200

Ive played with everything from pins to jewelry in the last 10 years or so. thr cost of controlled chemicals has gone way up (due to regs) and the commodities markets way down (I blame stupid! Lol)

Lets play a guess at the % game (sorry Chris) but the /average/ yard buys @ 15-30% below their sell price. For pm it can be 40-95% bare value.
So he sells to a refiner a few hundred tons of gold flashed cell boards. That refiner has hundreds of other sellers as well.
Refiner sets about refining said 1000 tons from 100 sellers and recovers enough after weeks of processing to get a 10-20% return on ALL submitted material.

Basically I don't want to be the one to send you to the er with acid burns (or jail for improper handling) in order to spend $20 to earn $2.
If you get my point

Thanks for the information, I will probably just try to sell them as nickel.

If you have any at the moment, could you check if they are magnetic? Mine aren't, I would have thought that they would be considering nickel is meant to be magnetic.

Pure nickel is ferromagnetic but in most alloys are not.

My last batch went Thursday so none at the moment but if the postal service decides to deliver on time I have 3 XT/370s coming Tuesday with 10meg Seagates. Memory alone and a good guide for everyone... only my super picked them up.

This is m magnetic test set l2r
Standard cobalt mag. NeoD from modern hard disk super finger remover from 1979 ibm prototype drive. Very similar onea i early maxtor ibm and amd/Mitsubishi test drives

(Btw that's a 62lb pdm from a sony 736 mini its holding up!)

Last and final notes.
If you opt to refine anything on your own watch at the very least 10 videos from 10 people. Boring but better safe than sorry.
Find a little Chinese shop or Vietnamese shop. Find someone who speaks English (or whatever you speak) and ask for
One bottle THAI SPIDER PEPPER PASTE
One bottle SCORPION PEPPER PASTE

One bottle GHOST PEPPER OIL EXTRACT

IF you get burned or spill acid of any type these are the three most powerful BASEs available without intervention
Apply paste In order Thai thin Scorpion thick and heavy to skin burns WITHOUT washing. Do NOT apply any water cleansers etc of any type to acid burns. It only spreads acids across the skin. Dial 911 or 999 or 311 (whatever is local) . You won't make it without serious damage unless the er is next door.

Use ghost extract (a thin... petrol consistency oil) to seal acid spills by drawing a circle around it. Then standard cat litter or oil dry will soak it up safely. Scoop. Bag in the litter container. Mark with the acid contents and drop off at local hazmat drop or fire dpt.
