Old style electrolytic capacitors, do they have any value? If they were removed off some boards, would that increase the grade of the board? i know it would reduce the weight, which in turn decreases overall value by that amount of weight. I always throw them in the Brown board / Low grade bin when they come off while taking stuff apart. If they were worth anything better then low grade at .15 a pound. Any info?

Those plastic wrapped canisters are most likely aluminum foil capacitors. Common as dirt and worth just about as much. I still don't throw them out as I am hoping I can find a local scrapyard that will pay breakage price for them.

The ones to watch for are the tantalum foil capacitors.

They are junk except the white box style one pictured should contain copper. You might be able to find a scrap yard that will take those as transformers or if you are really really bored you can take them apart easily.

You really need to check those capacitors on ebay or other places. Rubycon capacitors can go from $1 - $15 depending on the type of capacitor.

Other larger branded capacitors have similar value.

I'll buy it off you if you're gonna get rid of it.

Just an FYI; that post was many years old. I doubt they kept them this long. ;)
But who knows. :)

If you guys have them in large numbers, I'm interested in buying them all. But shipping costs may be the deterrent if you have small numbers of these capacitors.

A local yard buys them from me as aluminium breakage at 40č per lb. +-
I found a 30gal garbage bin holds about 50-60lbs. If you’re in the Great Lakes area you’re welcome to them at my yards rate of the day.
Like you said shipping this stuff is the value killer.
As for actual content value as of about six months ago when I last asked a recovery company I use they’re worth $1.90 per lb not excluding costs. They pay $0.70 per pound as of posting.

On the other hand if you’re able to remanufacture them.... the smallest ones appear to sell for 50-75č each at the bottom end. So I can see where there’s money in that.

The ones I’d be happy to ship to you are the giant appliance caps if you’re interested in them. Even my local yard is afraid of them.

The price has dropped a bit since the last post here.
