Smoke alarm. Yes they're silver plated brass.
Now that you know put it back together and bring it to a fire department or hazmat centre. They have radioactive glow like a lightbulb material in them.
1) no one will willingly buy the board. (Atleast not from a consumer)
2) taking them apart breaks laws in most states.
3) selling them without declaring them (hey smoke detector boards) is a federal offence. Punishable by up to 20 years in prison!

No. Those little 4-leg squares are solid state capacitors, gate fuses, or current resistors; depending on the codes. Most would go cbm rate at a large scrap yard. Boardsort doesn't buy them.

Wow that's crazy I would've never thought that. That appears to be a pretty standard low grade board. Are there other common items with rules/dangers like that that I wouldn't expect? Off the top of your head?

Smoke detectors
Carbon monoxide detectors
(Insert gas here) detectors
All have a radioactive unit
All have heavy regulations and fines/imprisonment rules.

SOME digital thermostats and old Hospital digital thermometers have mercury. But the ones that do are marked.

Pre-1992 equipment sometimes has mercury batteries.

Old organs have mercury sensors for temperature control. as do any server/mainframe temperature units.

Tube tvs are regulated due to phosphorus.
The "problem" of leaded glass is a myth long disproved abd the glass itself is as far as I'm aware only monitored in 1 or 2 states. Cal and possibly ohio.

Many older computer boards, especially pre1988 and kit computers, have boron components, regulated by the fda and epa as to disposal. Ti-80 and ti-90/99 come to mind. And old tandy equipment. The commodore vic line.

americium-241 in smoke detectors

Mercury and boron are obvious.

I'll see if i can track down warnings and regulations for the other detectors
