You should, if you can, remove the heat sink.

Begin by inserting a thin flat blade screwdriver under one corner of the heat sink, gently prying up from one corner, then another corner and so on.
Should pop right off.

Then add heat sink to your aluminum pile/bucket.

The heat sink will typically pop right off with some effort. Leaving the IC beneath it still attached to the board. Very rarely, have I ever had the heat sink pull up a portion of the IC. It does happen, but again, not too often.

Not sure what boardsort requires on MBs, I can't afford to ship those so I sell mine more locally.

But that particular heatsink has a steel latch (not sure if it has a more appropriate name) that is easy to get off. Those heatsinks usually aren't glued down so if you push down on both sides of the latch to get the hooks below the metal loops on the MB you should just have to twist counterclockwise and then pull it up.

Exactly. The little steel bar is holding down the heatsink.
Hell $15 titanium scissors can cut through those bars on the off chance it won’t compress for you.
But I prefer a $4 dewalt nail head trimmer

I was a Boardsort three yrs ago and was told to leave the heat sink on to add to the weight. I do not remember if that was on motherboards or finger cards. But now I see finger cards have different classes and to get the better grade the heat sink must be removed, which is not a problem as I have been taking them off. The trouble starts with the MB's because I have over 20 large tote bins full of sorted MB's to get to Boardsort and all have the secondary piece on them. What do I do?

First keep in mind motherboards have changed too. Classes are different from the past.
So if you need to resort (eg colours from green) it’s just a matter of pulling the heatsinks whilst resorting.

But if they’re sorted good for the current classing email Chris for an answer.

Leaving them on, in bulk, will be acceptable, but at a lower price point.
