Seems to be insulated with silver plated mesh cloth tape or something . Am I even close?

Not all that glitters is gold.

I highly doubt anything other than the gold fingers on the connector are gold plated. The color of the wire, even accounting for a bad picture, just isn't right.

The tape, I've never heard anything about that tape being metallic but maybe someone else knows something I don't?
