Found this CPU cap floating around the bin, and it doesn't have an obvious home... Looks like gold plating, sounds like aluminum when dropped. Is this thing worth anything by itself or what? Any and all thoughts appreciated much!

I'd send it into boardsort packaged separately from any other materials you have to sell and request it to be graded using XRF. I would think it would go as gold pins, but value would be based on amount and purity of the gold.

I noticed you mentioned this a few times, but an XRF gun cannot tell you how much gold is in the plating, nor the karat of the plating. It is good for identifying the actual plating as Gold, but that is about it. If you had a solid chunk of Gold, the reading for %Au would be accurate and can be used to calculate karat, but not with plating. XRF is practically useless for Gold plated items.

That being said, it is always best to leave this type of CPU on the board for a slightly better grade.
