Greetings, all.

Anyone ever scrap a medical or chemistry analyzer similar to the one in the pic? If yes, were you a happy or sad camper?

Tks!

First WHY?!?

Those are quite expensive! While it's going to be a pain to do so you should at least consider selling it if it works!
But hey; too much trouble? I understand.
If it works take it apart.
Ebay (if you use them) has authorised partners for sellers to buy supplies from. Order a few dozen or hundred anti static bags and break that puppy down. (That is a puppy, they get much larger).
Individual boards can go for a few hundred each and you'll be quite surprised how many people need a replacement side panel.

As far as scrap; we'll. I'm guessing from the photo that one is going to be 4 foot tall by 3 deep by 9 wide. (Close?)
Assuming for each and every item you have a buyer you can pull around 100-250 in scrap depending on multiple factors on the low end. Up to $5-8 on the high.
There's a bit of peripheral and telco in there.
A LOT of wire. Most of which is going to be chromium nickel wire. Gold and palladium contacts.
Higher end ones can scrap out into many hundreds or even the 4 digits range.
There's a lot of transition and post transition metals in them. Stuff that would make small recycling yards scratch their heads.

But a combination of boardsort and a large yard and a COIN shop you could theoretically break the $1K mark even on a small one like that

To note the extremes
Chromium nickel wire is $3-$3.25 per lb
Rhodium is over $1200 per ounce
Gold at $1050-1100 p/oz
Palladium at $1120-1140
Platinum at 980-1040
Boron is around $9 per ounce
Floro-Radium oxide at $20-$22 per ounce
Telco in the $5 range here
Lots of ICs in sockets and possibly gold caps.
Lead
Carbon
Steel in multiple classes

Assuming under $100 into it or free you'll make money if you want to.
I've seen them on ebay and cl for under $500 and never understand but most of the things on those sites doesn't make sense.

lostinlodos,

Thank you for your (as usual) informative reply.

I wish they looked like the picture. Selling was my first hope also. But, when I saw them (there are 4 of various manf. and sizes) in the wild, I realized that breaking them down was the only option. They had been stored outside exposed to the elements.

A scrapper friend of mine found them - tried to recycle one of them - it was too hard for him. He's the sledge hammer and crow bar type. He pulled out 6 different cards and gave them to me. The rest went to his local scrap yard. The cards made me take a double take and now i'm thinking of picking up all of them and making them my long term "special" project. I will post pics of what I find as soon as I can.

Wish me luck . . .

Funny as it may sound and being a long time seller on ebay I often come across items that I can not locate on ebay in their prior history of selling. At first that use to discourage me and I scrapped a large number of things that I felt had no value. One day I began to realize that the largest reason that some items are not on ebay is bc they are either fairly rare or no one is selling them. Funny how a mid 70's board for an no longer in production soft serve machine can flip for $200-300 as well as many other parts that are just no longer in production! Nice find....Let me know how you make out with them!

Ebay has some paid levels for larger sellers. With Better access to easier tools and deeper longer (older) records.
Paying into a seller level does have benefits and is worth trying since they all have short free trials.
Stuff you won't find in the 90 days of sold history often comes up in a database scan when posting via seller central's bulk tool and clicking the compare button finding something posted 14 months ago.
Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's worthless.
And I'm stating from history even damaged those are worth money. The more broken down the better. You'll need to be patient and wait but stuff like that does sell eventually
Just list it as for parts, not used. And be clear it was in water. That way you're going to get a repairman looking for ICs and resistors rather than switches and relays that would be ruined once wet.
Straight boards will sell better than a full busted unit. As long as you've got the space take the time.

The other thing is stuff like this, high tier medical equipment, doesn't end up on ebay often because it's rarely in consumer hands. I buy "junk" via medtech all the time to flip to boardsort and occasionally ebay or Craigslist. But medtech isn't a consumer site. And you need credentials and verification to even get an account but finding a clinic that was liquidated on there is an easy source for high grade materials.

So DO try. You've got a nice machine in the photo. Even trashed it's got good value .

For a btw comparison I had one that was (if I remember) a Sirrus and was nearly 40'X50'X10' and paid $400 for it.
So far it's been 6 years and I've made over 3k in sales on parts.
Surprisingly the shell and external parts and panels went first. But the slow and eventual market is out there. Still got about 50lbs of crap from it selling at a trickle rate but I'm way over my investment.
It was a 40k machine when new

I rented a storage unit for a month to break it down in before moving the individual parts into the house. Making it far more manageable in size. From there a combination of 10 day auctions (with auto repost) and 30 day fixed price sales (originally 10 day) with a bin option the stuff has moved out very slowly but consistently.

Most people don't want to wait over six years but as an extreme example it shows what patience will do for an item.

Thanks again to both you and michaelcali for your insights and suggestions.

I’ll will be picking them up soon and will be posting pics and many questions (which I’m sure will be many).

Happy New Year to all!

These are pics of just two of the boards that my sledge hammer scrapper/friend gave to me from the analyzer he worked over.

Front says Olympus DV320404 on both boards but the boards are not identical. The one on the right is populated with more ??? that have heatsinks attached to them.

The rear pics show a ton of MLCC's and resistors. Gold conductive paths?

Help ? to identify and grade please.
