Acronyms, abbreviations etc is a whole nother issue.
I could write a multi volume series on explaining them.
Simply put there's so many I wouldn't know where to start.
There are three sets you'll find me use a lot.

The first is periodic abbreviations. For example au for gold, al for aluminium, pb for lead.
The second is the international abbreviations for plastics. Slightly different from the American list but not all states use the American list and California has adopted the national list, meaning the majority of production uses it now. Examples are hdpe, ldpe, and abs plastics.

Finally I use a lot of Latin shorthand; etc for et cetera, e.g. For example given, and some that may confuse people like et sum which is far shorter than and many more. Most of my posting is done on my phone.

Beyond that the single acronym I use most is CMC for ceramic monolithic capacitor. Which is commonly also shown as mcc.

Like I said I'd really not know where to begin on that.
Not to mention there's so many with multiple meanings and very few of us know them all. I'll admit darksky lost me on a few in his ICs thread. So I'm often looking things up to to see what the meanings are and chose the best based on the surrounding text.

Darksky, I apologise, you were looking for an answer very different than the question I was understanding. Glad MLS got that for you. Never quite got what it was you were asking for.
I feel so stupid now.

To reply to the rest of what you brought up:

Boardsort does still buy gold pins. It's not on the quote form because the now scan them with an xrf gun and pay out based on actual materials content. An electroplated copper pin is worth considerably less than a chemically plated gold pin. Add to that the actual gold alloyed pins that are truely gold they pay based on what materials make up the pins rather than a blanket range. It's just more fair that way with so much variation in materials.

Cherrypicking is a loaded topic. First most boards are truely worth more as a board than as dissected components. Second even on the boards that can be lightly harvested removing too much or the wrong things can drop a boards value to midgrade very quickly. The gain to loss risk is quite large.
Finally I've heard too many people who got hurt with this method or that and asked for my suggestion on other methods. My suggestion is if you aren't ready for mistakes don't try. I've had more than my share of accidents and have wound up in the er a few times trail of blood and all. An er visit wipes out any dissection gains very quickly. :(

Refining: I've tried. For some people it's a good hobby. For some it's not. For me it's not worth it and I'm not qualified to give advice in the first place. I'll say sandbath doesn't work on anything but specific boards. Refining whole boards is a waste of money. If you're going to refine spend the $200-$300 on an industrial heat gun. Use that for depopulation. And refine components, not boards.
As a tech I use a ryobi heat gun to remove working components to save for future use. It's listed in my tools post. After getting the hang of what temperature for what boards it's been the best depopulation method I've seen or tried. Works every time.

You didn't irritate me at all. I was annoyed I couldn't figure out what you wanted. I kept answering and you kept asking again. Lol. I was totally lost on what you wanted.
All is well

Thank you for your response,. The funny thing about conversations when you get older is that sometimes the understanding of what is said is after the conversation is completed and you think to yourself, sometimes hours later, this thought would have been a better response than the one that I gave. But at least here we can repost if we get a better thought. The brain is not always fully in gear. LOL

mdesscrapper; I'm not sure what's worse, my hard drive crashes or my memory corruption. Sometimes even my power supply gives out. I feel outdated looking at new modern models. And I'm not all that old yet either. A few more decades I'll be an antique!
Like every thing else I wish it was less expensive to fix parts and easier to get replacements. But alas we are often stuck with what we have and make due, often quite well.

lostinlodos thank you so much for taking the time to explain that too me. The last couple of days i have spent a lot of time searching and reading through the forums. I read approximately 75% of the post in the "What is it? Identification Forum" and I am about half way through reading the posts in the "E-Scrap Forum General Discussion" forum.

After reading this many post 3 things about you jumped out at me:

1) You take your responsibilities as a Moderator very seriously. You actually respond/reply to every single question asked. for the life of me I don't know how you do it or where you possibly find the time to do it. I take my hat off to you sir! I believe that Chris hit the "jack-pot" when he landed you as a moderator.

2) Beyond question you are the most knowledgeable person I have ever encountered in regards to the e-scrap industry, the various components that are part of that industry and (even more impressive), the materials used in te manufacturing of those components the. I actually thought I was better informed in that area than possible anyone else around but I must admit, i am not even worthy of being in the same room as you. Again, Hats off and I am humbled by your superior knowledge!

3) As I read post after post, it became crystal clear that you have resources and and a data base that far exceeds anything I have ever encountered. Quite frankly, i would pay a Kings ransom for resources and a data base like the one you possess. Hail to the King, Long live the King!

Because of those 3 things I could not for the life of me figure out why you were giving me the run-around and refused to give me a straight answer. I was starting to develop a complex! Was it just me? Had I rubbed you the wrong way or possible insulted you in some way? I knew you had the ability and knowledge to answer my question, just could not understand why you would not.

Now I understand! In the words of "Cool Hand Luke" "What we had here was a failure to communicate". thanks again for the explanation

One last thing, I have something I need to discuss with you privately so in the next few day's i'll be sending you an email that will explain everything. On the subject line it will say "Greetings From From Darksky.

if, after reading the message, I manage to arouse your curiosity, feel free to to respond with any and all questions.

Thanks again for explaining.

It's not as much knowledge as much as it is I've done everything you shouldn't do. Every time someone said it can't be done or not to I went and did so. That's more of luck than knowledge. I've said a few time 'I've blown myself up so you don't have to' and that's a honest as I can get.
What would happen if I put a LiOn battery in a bucket of acid to refine the gold. That was interesting. Kaboom!
Or can I power a 386 off a car battery. Oops. Guess not. As a kid my father wanted to kill me nearly daily for this or that. But stubbornness kept me going back. I did manage to fix, not replace, my 386 leading edge despite frying it with an unbuffered car battery.
Every mistake had me seeking out the highest level source to not make it again.
For escrap that sent me to fabricators to see how it's made and recyclers to see how it's unmade. And they don't take my plastic bottles on the curb for free because they're kind, they make money. How. In computing telling me my card isn't compatible isn't a fact, it's a challenge, one I've always won eventually though often far past the usefulness of whatever the incompatibility was. It took me over a year to get sata and USB running on my C64. I gave it to a friend who thinks that's the coolest thing ever. A 50 meg hard drive with 34 partitions plugged into a custom breadboard of controllers for format shifting.
My primary scrap comes from archaic if not ancient tech. I tortured poor Chris and Bruce for many months with bad category placement and strange what the hell is it boards. They politely kept taking stuff no matter how wrong My category was. No matter how obscure it was. Be it gold flashed glass boards or 10 pound mechanical silver wire wraps from a calculating machine. Believe we both learned together what weird attempts have been made in the march of digital progress.
But I'm not all that social, I don't pay attention for long, and much of the between the lines stuff is totally lost on me. I'm also (usually) answering everything here in short bursts on my phone. Which is why I plead for people to limit each individual thread to a half dozen pics. I don't care if you post 10 new threads but chances are I'm going to mess something up when the list is 100 boards long. Honestly; I'm not doing anything now that earlier users didn't do for me. Boardsort is one of the most honest buyers, communities, I've found.
If I come off abrasive at times it's my lack of social abilities, not something the user did. most of the times, sometimes I lash out at idiots like the guy who said plastic 386 were worth $50 or that pentium pros are the most expensive scrap cpu ever. But in those cases it was always someone who was lying on purpose. That and the gold by mail guys and Russian porn sites drive me nutz!

Jez can see you guys don't use Twitter.

Lostinlodos two questions. as I cannot seem to find a post about it. Gold Finger Cards come in various forms but Video Cards, at lest higher end ones, have a "Flat Pack" on them. Do they have to stay? and I have one of those I960 Plastic Procs. where does it fall price wise if I can keep the pins on it during removal? If not does it still go as pinless?

Twitter? You mean the birds miners carry? Sheesh.

Removing ICs is a two fold issue
First boardsort frown upon removing a soldered IC from a board and selling it separately. Yes there are some very high end cards where you can remove an IC or two and still get gfc. But most of those card cases would be telco to begin with so you’re/still: actually loosing money.

Plastic 960s are mostly bga chips. Mostly. They’re IC rate to begin with. Even the ones with the silver pins go as IC.
The only “plastic” 960s that would get a cpu rate are the black fibre ones that are about 3/4 inch per side and have half-length gold pins (stub pins). Which go black fibre CPUs. Loose more than a few pins and it will fall very quickly in value as they’re considerably less gold content to begin with.

Hey Workinman, you think these are long you should look at some of the earliest posts from Chris and agent K.
Some are a page long per post! Lol. I guess with topics we love we get carried away sometimes.
Want to get a really long reply ask me about the differences between dip and zip. Or really see me mad? Ask me to find a benefit to LGA over pga. That makes me explode! There are none from a tech point.
Don’t ever ask me to compare a to b in and expect a ZD one liner. you’ll get 10 pages of tit for tat. Lol
Crap, this is long again. ;)
