Search Google Images for MOSFETs and Schottky Diodes and what pops up are images that show very similar components.

Does anyone have a quick way of identifying them in the wild without part numbers?

Also. I read on the GRF forum that MOSFETs contain gold wires. Can anyone back up that claim?

No without a part number aside from it's location and what the traces go to (deductive reasoning), and there's no way to know.
What you're looking at is a standard single inline pin (SIP) package. What's inside it can vary.

They may or may not have gold inside.

I'm fairly certain those three leg ones habe no pms in then... they are not integrated circus.

The diodes I am not so sure about, but doubt it.

i bang the plastic off with a hammer..(never noticed gold) but the rest is #2 copper...snap a leg and you can see copper...do them as you get them instead of waiting til you have a 3 pound bag like me
