I stumbled upon a few phones. Some are good and hope to resell. Others are not and plan to scrap.
I am starting to realize that i should know what im taking apart before i start.
So I got this board from this phone. Just because it is a phone board does that mesn its telcom? I kind of doubt it but thought i would ask.

that is a lot better then your normal phone board :P

but to answer your question, just because it was used in a telecommunication application does not make it 'telecom' class.

I think it will go as peripheral, but id say you have a decent chance of getting a higher grade. Set it aside for grading if you send a shipment in.

This is an expansion unit from an office telecommunications system.

As mls said this one is borderline and I’d set it aside in hopes for an upgrade.
The base unit phone board will almost always be telco, the expansions are usually peripheral or on the boarder, like this one.
Oh and the little guy is midgrade

What do you mean to set it aside? How will I know if it becomes telcomm?
I plan on making a trip late december to Ohio with what I know, and learning from that.
I have been looking at a lot of images of boards and once I think I know what something is I'm wrong. what makes a board peripheral or telcomm? Is it the number of ic chips as opposed to other items?

If you’re bringing it in to them keep is aside as in on it’s own, hand it to someone and say not sure on this one.
For shipping my questionable boards get their own box that includes a note in it. Or simply pack it alone in a freezer bag. Ziplock freezer bags tend to hold up well enough to know it’s meant to be separate.
Personally with a single board I’d quote it out as peripheral. Put it in a ziplock with a note and toss it in a box with my peripheral.
If it deserves an upgrade they will do so on site and send you an email.

Beyond the low grade (brown) and midgrade (junk green) boards:

Excluding specific class items like cd/dvd boards and hard drive boards, ram; everything falls into three general classes

Gold cap chip board will have gold cap chips on it

Telco will be mostly, or fully populated with ICs (chips) and CMCs (ceramic capacitors). With little to no external copper and aluminium (coils, al capacitors resisters etc) Or some obscene amount of gold (tablet boards etc).
Telco is based on high grade board population, and lots of it.

Peripheral is for everything good that isn’t telco or some single-type class. Basically a catch all category.

Hope that helps. If you have questions just ask.

adding the unkown graded item(s) to the shipping invoice or the notes section when you submit your order is also a good idea.

Now that we are talking about board types, I am seeing info that some gold finger cards can be upgraded to telco if heavy enough with ic's and flat packs or so it seems to me. If this is right do I need to take the bracket off to ensure that it goes to telco? Thank you for all responses.

if you go in person, just put stuff you are unsure about in a separate container and ask when you get there. I always have a couple boards that I have to ask about when i bring stuff in.

Generally speaking that is a correct assessment.
The bracket is part of pricing in gold finger cards. It would be considered “junk” weight in telco. Taking a voodoo for example, many would make telco without the bracket but add that massive iron (not steel) bracket to it and it’s not going to make the jump.
Very high end memory expansions for old Apple Macs are like that too. In a sense. Remove the transformer you have a populated telco card. Leave it on it just barely gets gold finger card.
Junk is any material with a lower value than the board class.
Another example is 8-bit computer motherboards. Most get peripheral rather than large (old) socket because the power system is integrated into the main board.

If you have something you think should be telco minus this or that post a photo on a new thread and one of us will take a look at it.
