The first photo: the main boards are cell phone board class. You should pop off the shields and wires.
Attached wires and flat wire is mixed wire

The second photo: peripheral

I figured the second one was likely peripheral.......In your opinion, what is the best way to determine if something is peripheral? Sparsely populated, from a certain area of a desktop, laptop, monitor?

the best way to think about it is a ''miscellaneous'' pile.

Generally things that are small, or dont have much on them and dont have heavy items on them like transducers or inductors (copper coils) or large capacitors. And they need to be green on both sides (ie, no brown board).
