Board out of an old Sun Sparc server. Board has two CPUs on it. The heat sinks actually screwed onto the CPUs and have been removed. The silver stuff on the CPUs is heat sink compound. How do I grade this board?

If you can remove the processors and are gold plated underneath they could go for double sided gold cap. Look at the picture in the middle in the link below.

Those are beautiful chips, but they dont look socketed, and even if you sold them as gold capped chip board at $5.00/lb, you'll get a buck or 2. Cut around the chip with a pair of Wiss yellow handled tin snips if you're right handed, be careful not to break the chip. Still Boardsort will only pay $4 to $12 a pound, being the pins are saudered to the board, but they would bring $70 or so there if they were socketed, but go another way w them, lots of people would buy those for that much or more just the way they are.Don't short yourself. But BS does pay competitive prices for ceramic cpus, higher end ones.

find a heat gun and a WELL ventilated area. heat the underside of the board while using something to lightly pry the chip off the board. when the solder gets hot enough you can pretty easily pull the chip out.

A word of caution though, the board can get hot enough to burn and the fumes are rather toxic. Also, some components can 'pop', so wear a face mask. Lead in the solder can also volatilize, hence the reason for a WELL ventilated area.

money wise, it is VERY well worth doing if you have a bunch. you should be able to get full price for the chips (and those are indeed double sided gold caps) and most likely a low grade for the board.

Ok, so I've pulled the CPUs. Couple minutes with a heat gun and they're off.

Now, how would the board be graded?

Thanks,

Tony

I think the board can go for peripheral after removing the cpu's. The reason is because you still have eight good size ic chips on the board, gold platted connector and some monolithic capacitors.
