Do the prices differ for the older ram like DDR 1 or 2?
And does the size make a difference like weather is 256 MB or 1 GB?

Will removing the metal housing from server RAM move it up to the higher priced class?

Yes. Removing heat spreaders without damaging the modules will bump it to standard gold finger ram.
