As for shot glasses... another tool I use to raise items off the bench is small lead glass bowls, dishes, etc. Pb glass is good for extreme, localised, heat. I have stick irons so I use lead glass ash trays to hold the hot units. You can slide a lead glass into a household oven on the highest setting and make toxic lead goo. Not wise. But it will safely hold a 1500• iron tip without cracking or melting. And with relatively little concern on fumes since your smart and venting the gas from soldering anyway (right!?). Just check the stamp on the bottom to make sure it’s 35%-60% lead. Any higher it’s too toxic. Any lower you risk breakage.
