I've got a bunch of UPS batteries that I'll be taking to boardsort (along with everything else). Do I need to tape the battery terminals on those? I've already taped the laptop batteries.

Thanks!

Here I simply don’t know.
With a small ups battery and solid terminals I think you should.
On larger ones:
Science says don’t. It depends on how the battery breathes. Larger batteries may have breathing hollows in the contact posts. Which you don’t want to tape over.

Ok, thanks for the reply. I think I'll take them as-is. If they won't accept them, there is a local place that will. Plus I have a bunch of steel and aluminum that I need to take to the local yard.

Thanks!

A few times since they first started taking PbA I sent some smaller ones and just taped the hell out of the terminals (contacts on small form factor) with t-Rex tape. Didn’t have any issue from Chris.
I’ll shoot an email and ask.

Ultimately it’s a class where I’m not sure shipping is a good idea for the inexperienced. If it’s not packaged properly and it’s not shipped correctly so many things can go wrong. From acid spills to hydrogen explosions.
I also don’t think it’s one where you can simply say tape or don’t and not run into trouble. Obvious we know not to tape car batteries and lamp batteries. But the larger UPS systems in the server+ arena can easily use similar or even the same batteries. I’ve seen ACDelco in minicomputer backups.

I don't see how you can ship them economically, or why when every local yard (even way down here in FL where scrap prices seem to be consistently a quarter to third less than rest of country) will accept pbA for 30-35¢ a lb.

Idk who but someone is paying real good for scrap pbA batteries by the pallet minimum, enough that my local yard can afford to ship them out, anyone know a buyer at that level? I would assume whoever it is will be a single item buyer, and may require a secondhand metals recycler license or equivalent in your state

Like lithium dry cells: 100% of PbA batteries is recyclable.
Unlike the dry cells PbA batteries are self sustaining value wise.
HCl is expensive. The high quality plastics. Copper. Tin. Lead. Etc.
Most non-mechanical use ones are worth 2-3x as much to the recycler, enough to offset the auto batteries, since they can simply be dumped, cleaned, and refilled.

That said PbA batteries fall in with scrap metals here. They don’t expect them mailed any more than 500 lbs of steel.
You can ship it if you want (and do so correctly according to the law) but it’s not the point.
