The magnet trick tends to work most of the time
Look this rusty nail sticks to my key magnet.
Now I put my magical metal between and it sticks to my magnet too. But look no more sticky nail under my magic metal. :D

I'm still trying to make sure I'm on the right page with the rhodium. The tiny squares is what I'm looking for right?

Can rhodium have a gold tint or is it always silver colored? Some of the squares have a slight gold tint to them.

If this is in fact what I'm looking for what's the best way to get them off the drive head?

Thanks for all the help :)

Looks like it's been removed already here. It's a tiny pickup on the heads at the tip.
I'll pull another one apart in a short while and post better pictures than I did before.

Ohh ok I may have pulled the right part then. I will take a picture of the pieces I pulled and post it and see if I have the right thing.

There you go. There's a tiny piece of metal on the very tip end . The pickup (wrong term but you understand eh) Usually a high content rhodium alloy.

Actually it's the same idea as record needles and their diamond chips. Save enough there's some money there; in both cases.

Most plausible answer:

Activated carbon pellets, as a desiccant and to absorb any other airborne fumes from material outgassing, to prevent them from depositing on critical locations such as the media surface.

Most elegant answer:

It's a bit bucket. Those are all your erased bits.

I was thinking it was a type of desiccant.
