I chose the barracuda because it's the biggest baddest meanest modern (3½ inch ½height) drive still in use. (Streaming media/Android tv/cable dvr/etc) a best case scenario.
(Asin I targeted the best drive You'll normally find in standard equipment )

Hard drive with board.

Well I really need to so that math eh?
Guess I've been a bit lasy on doing my forum work. Sorry.
With the commodities crash of late I'll fix the values and type in the math today.

I believe in most cases, for profit to efficiency ratio, the best thing to do is unscrew the logic board from the hard drive, then toss what's left into your scrap metal pile. Depending on how local yards buy your hard drives, you can get full aluminum, dirty aluminum, or shred price.

I think it's still worth taking the top off of older drives and anything under 3" size to see if the platters are platinum/palladium or the thicker heavier gold platters.
Gold platters are worth considerably more due to the whole disc being a gold alloy not just the plating.
They turn a deep rich red brown (gold+rhodium+iron) or orangish green brown (gold+copper+iron) when they oxidize. If the seal didn't break/leak before you they look like a dull unpolished brass.
