I’m getting ready to send my first shipment in to Boardsort, (mother boards, peripheral boards, gold finger cards, ram etc.) and was wondering if anyone had any shipping recommendations. I’ve checked FedEx, USPS and UPS and from what I’ve seen, UPS seems like the best one to use. They give you flat rate shipping on your own packaging, (USPS and FedEx only give you flat rate shipping on their set package sizes) and their sizes are in cubic inches, so you can use a box of all sorts of dimensions as long as the cubic inches are in the set range for that category. Example: Extra Large: 1,051 – 1,728 cubic inches. So you could ship a 15" x 13" x 8-1/2" box with UPS Ground for $25, (weight doesn’t matter as long as its 50lbs and under). If you used FedEx’s flat rate Extra Large Express Box, (15-3/4" x 14-3/16" x 6") it would cost $46.75. And USPS doesn’t even have an extra-large flat rate box. Their biggest size is a large flat rate box, (12" x 12" x 5-1/2") that would cost $21.10 to ship. So if anyone could share some advice on shipping, that would be great.

If your shipping a small amount then I would follow lost's advice. However if your shipping a few hundred pounds or more then give me a call 814-443-6389

Yes.
Gorven is also an option. Shipping LTL lots on a discounted rate. Ideal if you are passing the 150Lb point where even Fedex gets expensive.

For FedEx you would need an account: not a walk in.
Like any online service you enter your information to sign up and link a credit card.
Using the online shipping order form you can set the dimensions and quantity of boxes as a single “order”.

Shipping time average for ground:
West of the rockies, 4 days-5days
Mountain zone, 4 days
Central states and Mississippi border states 2-4 days.
Ohio, 1-2 days
Other eastern states 2-3 days
New England, 3-5 days.
Hawaii and Alaska 5 days to one week.

Compare to priority mail that tends to be 3-5 days.

Thanks for the advice lostinlodos and gorven, but it seems to me that FedEx does charge by weight. If you fill out their calculate shipping rates form on their website, the price for shipping goes up the heavier the box gets. So I'm confused.

Well...
I deeply regret the above post now.
I apologise!
I’m a bit behind. Looks like Fedex substantially increased their fuel surcharges.
Prices also went up twice this year and another jump looks scheduled for March.

I’m going to have to go back and produce a series of demo shipments again to see where rates actually are at the moment for the various shippers.
:(
Sorry

That said they still use size first over weight. Hence ‘generally’.
The opposite of the other two. Weight will increase the cost but at lower increments. A 12” cube costs less to ship than a 24” cube. Weight being the same.
The smaller the boxes the lower the ultimate rate will be regardless of how much weight is shipping.

I hope that explains it better

Yes that does explain it better. I'll probably end up using UPS but thanks for all the help.

I've been doing this a number of years, both by mail and in person. If you have high value items, priority is the way to go; jam it full of RAM/Logic boards and you'll never lose money.
If you have a bunch of peripheral boards/motherboards small socket, stuff that's just above $1 per pound payout (which is about what a box costs to ship UPS to Ohio, at last for me here in upstate NY), I generally hoard the stuff for a while until I have a pallet and just ship LTL freight.
I find that using a standard pallet (48x40) and stacking it around 4 feet high, costs about $300 bucks regardless if it's 700 pounds or a 1000, you just have to be pretty accurate on the weight when they are creating the BoL for you, as they can charge you a bit more if you tell them it's 500 pounds and it turns out to be 600. That stuff matters when trucking companies are determining fuel costs, etc.
I have myself a perpetual pallet that I just add things to when I have enough of it, like I said, small socket motherboards, peripheral boards, connector ends, etc.
When it reaches the point where the thing weighs 1000 pounds ish (doesn't have to be quite that heavy), get a quote, do a cost to profit analysis and on it's way it goes. Easy money.
Just don't forget to print the BoL for the trucking company!

Thanks for the advice but I only have about 70-80lbs of material. So nothing that large. I'm thinking about using several extra large UPS flat rate boxes for $25 each. That seems like the best way to go.

Depending on where you are USPS regional flat rate boxes are an option as well.
