Hey everyone,

I am still learning about how to classify older cpus. This is the first lot I have came across. I am wondering about the 386/486 gold caps. Does that category include Intel and Amd versions? Also, what would other intel cpus with gold caps be considered? I have a ceramic intel co processor, ceramic intel pentium with mmx, and intel overdrive that have a gold cap on one side. What do these sell as?

386/486 covers all square ceramic, pinned, CPUs from intel and all variants of that era that execute the i86 or i87 instruction set. From the 80186-80486.

Most x87 chips.

or the i80286 square with flat gold contacts on all 4 sides

Or the AMD AM4K00 risc CPUs.

The co-proc depends on what it is
The two Pentium chips are flukes that don’t fall into an exact category. I’ll ask Chris for clarification.

I appreciate the information thank you. The co proc i was referring to is the intel 80387DX , also have a cache controller A82385-20, and another square ceramic A82496 cache ctrl I know what I will do with the few that don't have a category. I am just trying to make sure everything is labeled correctly when shipped. So I appreciate your time and info

Both of those are 80386 extensions and would go as 386/486. Assuming they’re grey/purple ceramic with gold pins and not a more recent plastic package replacement.

Update:
Have a reply.
Let me be very specific here!
The actual intel pentium overdrive IF you remove the fan and heatsink will go as 386/486. As such I would probably toss the original AMD gold cap purple ceramic 5x86 there as well.

Chris also said the original pentium/MMX purple ceramic gold caps would qualify as 386/486.
This would cover the I4 architecture overdrive (socket 3), the socket 4, and socket 5 original pentium gold caps.
