Hi,
Any one know what materials were used to make these?
Looks like the spindle has gold plating, but not tested yet.
Scrap value? Museum value?

The platters are aluminium with a small amount of manganese. About 98:2 or so.

(The earliest ones were glass, so if it weighs more than a normal 3.5” hard disk whole it’s older and glass).

The platter coating is a copper ferrite with a small amount of gold. (Similar to very old magnetic tape coatings)

The spindle is aluminium.

The whole package in a long term acid bath will yield apx 2 grains of gold. Roughly $4 today. The acid costs more.


They’re slightly collectible to a small group of storage collectors but fairly common and regularly sell below $10
