do the aluminum heat sinks have to be removed from these boards ?

Yes in a majority of cases. When removing CPU heatsinks, check the bottom of the heatsink to make sure the CPU didn't come out along with the heatsink. If you do find that the CPU is stuck to the bottom of the heatsink, a flathead screwdriver will knock it loose. Place the heatsink in the appropriate scrap metal pile and the CPU into the appropriate CPU pile to send to boardsort.
