Hi,

Are server power supplies that have either gold fingers, or gold pins paid out at the same rate as regular, boring PC power supplies?

Thank you

You'd need to post a picture.
That said many server power CUBES can be cleaned a bit to get peripheral rate.

Two bricks and two cubes. ;)
I should have been more clear.
Need to post a photo with the covers off.
Totally Generally you'll need to remove all steel, most or all of the aluminium, copper pipes, and any capacitors over a quarter's diameter
These often have capacitors that are two inches or greater.
Any fans also need to go and clear out (snip) as much wire as you can.

After all that there's a good chance for peripheral.

I will not take them apart for the board, do not have enough or steady enough supply to make it worth while.

But would these be paid at the power supply without wire rate? I am thinking if they are then removing the gold connectors would make sense.

Any thoughts?

yes, they will all go as power supplies without wire.

I can attest that the one with gold fingers is worth tearing apart. Not only for the gold fingers, but the shell is aluminum and there is a yellow brass plate (occasionally the are copper too!) inside. The board inside will go as midgrade regardless, so its not worth taking them apart much more unless you REALLY want to go after the aluminum heat sinks. I tore apart 150+ of them a month ago :P

the rest of the power supplies are probably not worth much tearing apart, but it never hurts to look to see whats inside or to tear apart one or two to see what the difference is between what you make tearing them apart vs. what you get for them whole.

EDIT: to answer the second part of your question, if you can break off the connector easy, i would do so... just check to make sure they are not brass.

Yes whole; power supplies are power supplies.
These I normally do break down because the boards do make it worth while for me.
But
If you just chop the gold off the board you'll get peripheral for the wedge pin connector
If you go further you can pull the pins and get a decent rate for gold pins there.

They're heavy and actually quite thick. Usually on nickel which adds to the value over steel as well.

A generalisation for totally torn down to bare board
Bricks, long skinny ones, pay out between $1-$3 depending on what's inside it

Server cubes can often pass the $5 mark and I've had go and Cisco cubes pass the $15 point easily with the volume of copper piping heatsinks in them.
So I will always take the time to open up a cube all the way. Even if I don't go any further.

Aluminium canister caps at 25-35 cents
Brass at 1.20-1.45
Copper at 1.90-2.20
Aluminium spun (heatsinks) at 40-50 cents
Cast brass at $1-1.25
Ceramic resistors at 25-35
Steel at 2 cents
Gold on steel at $2.50-$10
Gold on nickel at $3.00-$50 depending on thickness
Etc
There's a LOT of value in the cubes.

Thank you so much for all this great info! Now you have me itching to take them apart, even if just to see all this cool stuff inside.

One final note here
I've had those wedge pins get under $5 per lb from Dell and DEC and over $40 for Cisco and Apple. So there's a massive range there.
I also know that the pins from late 70s and early 80s alpha cubes are almost pure, 10kt, solid wedges; so older equipment here is often higher rate.
Early HP servers used 8kt gold pins (gold nickel manganese chromium)
And the earliest Apple Mac servers used very thick gold on nickel/silver pins.
This stuff is getting into scrap jewellery rates in value but modern Dell servers have less gold on the pins than an APC redundancy array's pins. Putting it in the $2-3 range.

Stuff like this, if you pull those wedges it's best to find a jewellery or coin shop to test them. So you know up front what you have. Then you know you're looking at $3 or $300 before you send them in. ;)
