I convinced a rather rude and nasty guy once that a steel rim was aluminium because my magnet worked fine on everything else and not on my rim. His magnet must be faulty. He tossed his magnet in the iron pile. =]
Yes. Quite a bit of nickel in those old radios, silver too. And yes the older you go the more gold palladium and platinum you'll find. Rhodium, tin, copper brass etc. Good stuff as long as your careful of the hazards, vacuum tubes and ancient fly wheel caps. Zap. Lead, yuck. Sharp points, ouch. Asbestos, cough cough. You get the idea. Pre Korea and you'll make a nice haul.
