I have a few dozen lbs of pot metal that's gold plated and/or gold infused.
Anyone here know a decent refinery that will deal with this stuff. It's mostly on pewter and other lead blends. All from the late 1800s-mid-1900s.
I've no intention of even considering refining myself, lead is just trouble period.
But I can't fathom dumping this for pewter rate.
My best guess is about 1-3% gold weight. Around a clean Troy ounce on a final recovery give take.
Any thoughts welcome!

it would depend on a few things... is it individual gold plated items? Or is it all melted together? Is it homogeneous melt? has it been assayed? A picture might help if you have one.

from what it sounds like, I would doubt there is enough there for the quantity of material to make it worth while... but it depends on the current state of the material almost about as how much is in the material.

I'll post some photos in a bit but it's a random (unmelted) mess of stuff. Jewellery, chains, decorative weights and broaches. Some is thin plate. Some thick plate.
Some was 'infused' which is molten base plus molten gold to make it golden. But not gold.
If it wasn't for the pewter and lead I'd melt it clean and then have a drill a core to test.
I'll post photos in a moment.

as long as it is not melted together, you might be able to find someone to do the gold plating... problem is that it is so hard to get a good estimate on the payout, so you might have to have it toll refined by a small scale/home refiner. The gold filled stuff you should be able to get something for if they have the hallmarks.

The problem is that alot of refiners stay away from gold plated items because its causes so many headaches. Gold filled can provide enough return to make it worth while to go after, but they payout rate is usually low (lots of time/acid/processing).

you might have to look hard for a refiner because this stuff is often avoided (especially if it is not marked)... Gold content is often over estimated and creates 'PR' problems when the yields are not what the owner expects.

I took a bunch of photos but haven't gotten them uploaded yet, on today's list.
My issue with a refinery is that this would lower any batch I sent if I included it.
And I don't have enough to send it on it's own.
I guess I'm looking for a small group that actually deals with this stuff regularly.

Hopefully someone on the board can help.

The plated stuff would need to go through a sulfuric cell and the gold filled could be done by wet chemistry... unfortunately I am not set up for either.

Keep it unmelted and you might find someone to help you out.

Lost,

Have you tried a shout-out on the GRF board? That's where I would look for help.

James

cosmetal: I had an account a few times but they keep closing it. You need to be active to keep an account there and I'm not in the refining hobby myself.
I have two refineries I use for other stuff and both would take it but they both 'penalise' for lead content. An issue I fully understand.

But if my ratio judgements are close I'm looking at less than $500 when all is said and done. Thanks to all the Pb.
Was wondering if anyone new a more specialised location that would take this stuff more willingly.
Half value is still better than the ratio of wemakecashoffyourgoldbecausewereevlscumdotcom but it's a major dip regardless

Actually maybe I will send it to that mail scam place and take the $2 cheque just to be an arse and make them miserable.
Nah, but I can be evil too, haha! ;)
