If you know how to safely discharge the picture tube, you can take the CRT apart and recover the following things:

* degaussing cable (#2 copper wrapped in electrical tape)
* yoke (#2 copper wrapped around a ferrous core)
* mainboard (aluminum heatsinks and transformers/cbms)

When done, reassemble the CRT and dispose per your local environmental laws.

If you don't have too many CRT's remove the copper and mainboard, then assemble them so they look like they work. Then take em to Goodwill. They will send them the a computer recycler and will be properly delt with without costing you or Goodwill anything. I just take the Aluminum and copper off and take 4-5 a week to each goodwill around me.

CBM = copper bearing motor. This includes pretty much any transformer or electric motor where you have copper wrapped around a ferrous core.

Also check with your local (city/county) dump to see if they recycle the TVs and such. Our county dump collects the TVs and ships them off for processing by prisoners at a specialized recycling facility located behind the fence of a federal prison. Since they recycle 100% of everything they get, it doesn't matter to them that all of the good stuffs (as far as I'm concerned) is already gone.
