lostinlodos,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my post. Included are a few pics of the components in question. I am curious, is there any way to safely remove the heat sinks from what I believe are processors? I fear they are somehow soldered on?

The first pic is of the front and back of a Gemstone Motherboard. How would it be classified?

Any way, help in identifying some of the HP components is greatly appreciated. Like I said, I'd like to remove a few and save them as a starter to my future collection. I know the blue guys at the top of some of the last pics are resistor packs. Other than that, clueless.

lostinlodos,

I'm including another picture. It is the bottom view of IMG_5552.

Concerning IMG_5552 and the 5 white ceramic CPUs? There is a tag on one of the four rectangular white ceramic chips. However, the more square guy in the middle does not have any ID. Guess I won't know what it is? How, if I should feel so inclined, would I remove those w/o damage? That is why I submitted IMG_5555.

Thank you again for your valuable time and input.

Regards,

RustyFuryIII

woah... those are some nice boards... personally I wouldn't touch them and keep them intact as part of my collection. I would consider Ebay if the price was good enough, but some boards are just nice to hang on to.

That being said, top one in backplane, the others would be gold cap chip boards.

I can't be totally sure without my database. I feel so naked! Board should arrive Thursday so computer will be finished over the weekend

The 1K-C4 are all licenses from the Motorola AT&T research agreement. According to google. After you get past all the corvet stuff they come up as a Motorola ID on google on supply lists. Which is interesting since I assumed the c4 was an intel code for the low end 4000 series chips. So don't hold me to that yet.

For the four ceramic cap chips on the later post. The stamp is usually on the bottom (board) side.
Easiest way I found to get them off is to flip the board over, find the pin through location, and torch the board with a heat gun at that location. 900-950 tends to do it for these boards. Just be patient they'll fall out on their own from their weight.

The 1NB7 is a large surface mount mCC (multi chip carrier). Use a new blade in a utility knife or an xacto to gently cut along the pin mounts on the four sides to remove it. It may also be glued in the centre so you man need some gentle rocking, twisting etc to finally remove it.
Those aren't common, especially without the unremovable ceramic top cap. Nice find on that one! I've never found one without the ceramic cover. And I've yet to see someone remove the cover and not damage the chip so great find on that one!

Btw I dug some more. Two Chinese sales sites have them listed as Motorola as well. NOS (new old stock) is running around $10 American each, ¥70-80.

lostinlodos,

Great! Thanks for the reply. I've been away on business, sorry for the delay in responding.

I have two of each of those boards. I have plans for them and it does not involve destroying either one of them in any way. My wife and I think they look absolutely beautiful. If what I have in mind for them turns out as I expect it will, I'll post pictures.

I do have other HP boards I'll be posting up when I have time. I was told several years ago that I'd make a lousy used car salesman as I'd probably end up keeping a lot of my inventory instead of flipping the cars for profit. I have a great appreciation for the layout, engineering and architecture for many of the older PCBDs I've seen over the past 30yrs. Never could keep any of them as they were either needed for service, or didn't belong to me.

Thank you again for your time and your response.

Regards,

RustyFuryIII

Question, did YOU remove the ceramic cover of the 1NB7? Or did you get it that way. Do you still have it, and did you keep it.

If you notice in image 5552, at the four corners surrounding the five ceramic processors, have four square holes and four round holes. This is where the hardware to secure an aluminum plate on top, and a large aluminum, finned heat sink on the back passed thru.

In image 5555 (very last photograph of post dated Sept 5 at 3:08), you can see the bottom of the board, the bottom of each of those ceramic processors is visible. You'll notice the white heat sink compound present on the bottom of each processor. This is where the larger, finned aluminum heat sink made contact.

Basically, they sandwiched all five of those components between the aluminum plate on top and the large, finned aluminum heat sink on the bottom. Eight screws, four from the bottom, four from the top held it all in place.

I was wrong, 16 screws to secure large heat sink to back of PCBD. It is 8 screws to secure the top plate to the large aluminum heat sink.

Wow. Ohkay that's different.
Usually they are designed rather with a ceramic base unit or a ceramic over aluminium cap.
I've not come across this layout yet personally.
Poor carrier; looks so cold and naked. Lol
