They have a class for cellphones with batteries and cellphones without batteries
If you have a sealed battery eg iPhone don’t try to remove it yourself. If you puncture it: battery internals plus air equals hot fast blowtorch fire if your lucky. Big boom explosion if your not.

regardless on how they are sold tape needs to be placed over battery contacts

99% of the cell phones have batteries, some phones, about 10%, have no cover for the battery, taping those would the next best thing to do?

Is a phone worth more with plastic removed, I presume?

On other posts I read, Boardsort.com will buy batteries with gold contacts, does size make a difference, battery wise?

If the battery is a replaceable pop out you can leave it in for cell phone with battery. Or remove it for cell phone without batteries

Any non replaceable battery phones go as cell phone with battery
Any removed batteries need to have the contacts taped over.

Size makes a difference in going from cellphone battery class to laptop battery class, thinking more than 6 inches in any direction.

How bout just sending in the whole cell phone and leaving the removable battery in the plastic casing. Does that work? No tape? Will I run into any problems shipping them this way?

Nope, that’s what I was suggesting. Just leave it on. :)
