Any suggestions as to how I can get this lithium battery off? There is a small gap between the board and the bottom of the battery.

These are almost always pined. My suggestion if it hasn’t been turned on in the last few months is very gently slide a standard (flat) screwdriver underneath and slowly work it loose. If it has been powered up or you don’t know you can use a box cutter to remove any external sealer and then gently rock the box loose with a plate of lock jaw, slip jaw, etc pliers.

Looking at the back of the board it appears to have pins sticking thru the board and soldered. My guess isthey have been out of service for well over a 6 months just from talking to the guys at the school where I bought them. I'm to scared to heat up and melt the solder so I will try prying it up with a screw driver.
Wait a minute I can use a wood cheisel and cut the board around it. It's mid or low grade anyway. :)

A pair of size 2 tin snips would probably be easier. Or one of those fiskars “titanium” ratcheting pruners. Best $20 pruners I ever bought. Slice right through computer boards. :)
