I would bet money that both Lucas and Lost also have collections of the unique and weird scrap items that don't come along every day, maybe only one or two of the particular item but it gets saved just the same. Money sitting on the shelf but just can't let it go.

I knew I would get an interesting pic or two. How can we resist? Of course it does remind us of the things we tossed years back, now I am gonna cry. LOL As soon I get time I have a couple items to try to wow you all with, maybe it will but maybe it won't and you all will say oh I have a dozen of those. But it is interesting what is floating around.

Thanks for the extra zero. Lol
A few hundred is closer to reality. The Nintendo disk is the REAL super mario brothers 2 from japan. About 300 since I have the box and manual and it works.
8 inch disks pull around $20-$50 depending on what it is since they almost don’t exist and never really did.
One of these days I’ll start a WTF thread we can post our crazy stuff too. A look at what I got thread.
I have a 12” not so floppy disk that looks much like a phono record but it’s a movie (godfather).
An an 80” disk. (DIS Boot) (FYI not anywhere near my house and in a secure facility)
And a bunch of pre laser film stuff.
Think my interest in fuses is my destructive nature of testing what I’m told. Will a 20 amp fuse blow at 20, or 21; or 19???!?
But we could have a lot of historical fun with something like that.

Actually a thread gets lost over time but maybe a historical section for the weird and wonderful. This would serve several purposes one giving newbies and old guys the chance to see the oddities that are worth something more than scrap since anyone can come across one or two once in a great while (like the pickers on tv) and a lot of members may have a few to show. The main purpose would be to educate us on value of our scrap and what to look for as we roam around. I wonder how many times I have passed by something and didn't have a clue what I had missed and thought it was something of no value. I know we show items here and you do a great job of explaining what it is and where it came from but to see the whole item before it is in parts would be great. Over the years I have seen some pics like this and I thought great now I know what is inside of what I might buy for scrap or better. I know this forum is about computer and electronic scrap but sometimes you suggest something has more value than scrap to help the scrapper to make more profit in his or her scrapping.

ps do you have the equipment to play those discs? Not only to have but to use them is icing on the cake. Such as it would suck to have vhs tapes with family movies but no player to view them.

My CED player kick the bucket every time I use it. I can play both sides of a cartridge, maybe a second one. Then poof. Dead. Again.
Makes me sad if it happens when the movie is Playing. CED is a phonograph for movies. (Godfather, Jaws, Star Wars)

My 12 inch deck never tracked correctly. But I think it’s not totally compatible with my disk.

Meds; yes. I have players for most of my media.
My favourite genre is horror and sci-fi/low fantasy follows closely
Ask any horror fan over 30 what their favourite format for video is; most will say VHS.
On tape I prefer Betamax, specifically Betamax III. Stereo sound without II’s tracking compensation. III killed Betamax because it jumped like crazy. BUT, in a dark room with no lights, the jumping and bad slightly out of sync sound makes even c and z class horror scary. It was the BETAMAX version (type I Betachord) screeners of cannibal holocaust that lead to the criminal cases for snuff and murder.

Nothing beats CED in analogue though for quality when everything works. Even laser disc pales by comparison. Alas everything rarely worked.

8 inch floppy disks never really took off in the consumer world. The 5,25 disk was designed (by the same people) to make office use doable. 8” is extremely finicky. It filled a gap in innovation where code was to long to flip switches for binary input, not long enough for magnetic tapes that cost more than cars, and too time dependent to rely on a human fast switching punch cards.

The story of the hard drive is far more interesting though.
Try as the disk turns. Great, but one-sided, book. Historically accurate timeline though.
Some while back a user posted a picture of a magnetic drum unit. Those are worth many thousands and museums around the world buy them up quickly when they’re found.
Totally useless today, but kool historically.
In the 50s and 60s hard drives used such large recording sectors that dust, even dirt, wasn’t really a problem. People changed platters around like cds today. I’ve seen old 22 and 28” platters with massive gouges in them still work reliably when the bad sectors were mapped out. Can you imagine the advancement when you got sizes down so far that 5MB could fit in a commercial truck trailer! The originals took a while 4 story building. Now my phone takes pictures larger than that. 50MB can fit on the end of a human hair!

Can you believe I took time off from popping pins out of plastic to enjoy, and I mean immensely enjoy these last few posts on the antiquities? But then, I made my days wages selling a couple pieces of vintage pre-solid state electronics testing equipment for parts salvage earlier.

Unfortunately I missed the 70s media explosion. VPU, that lasted 6 months.
Deck master. VECD.
The last one was a weird European one. Take 50fps video. Drop half the frames. Record the audio at half speed from the source. Put the half frames and audio on a phonograph disk and play back at 2x speed with a 1:2 doubled imaging. Same movie, half the surface space. And single image pause was born!
