Hello there,

I have encountered the following problem with one of the boards I pulled out of one of those razor thin servers. This seems to be a peripheral card but there is a metal cage right on top of it which seems to be soldered to the card. I have been trying to separate the metal cage from it but I am destroying the card. I also see 2 separate tiny gold finger cards attached to the metal cage but, yet again, I can't manage to separate them. Do you think Boardsort will get upset if I send it as a peripheral card with the metal cage on it?

Also, I was wondering if you could help me identify a few more cards.

Thanks a million!

Kindly regards,
Natalia

A) gold finger card
B) peripheral (you need gold connectors for backplane)
I bookmarked this
I need to see the cage card from my computer where I can see it better

Generally this is not a good situation. However you also have two sets of gold fingers and a lot of gold pin connectors. I think this should just barely squeak by into peripheral.

Hello there Lostinlodos,

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer this tough question. Do you think I should send Chris the same pictures I posted in this forum to see if he allows me to send this board as is? I just don't want to upset any of the workers that receive my packages. I'm in pickle!

Kindly regards,
Natalia

I’ve run into stuff like this before; usually from cube servers.
Well the only way to be absolutely certain is to do as you suggest and send Chris a photo, cage 1 and cage 3 being all he’d need to class it; I’m fairly sure this will clear peripheral.

I would use a metal cutoff driver like the ones we used in automotive to cut exhaust or a drill with cutoff disk on drill mandrel and cut off most of cage and then may be able to remove rest with metal cutters if open enough to get at.
