I recently purchased 155 lbs. of cellphones to resell for a profit. Turns out I was duped because hidden inside the bags of whole phones were 70 lbs of "half phones", meaning only the portion of the phone with the lcd screen were present. Im wondering if there I can break even now, and am hoping to somehow still make a profit. Living in az, shipping is like $56.00 for 40 lbs of whole cellphones, ups ground. The boards of course are lighte and pay more per lb but is it more profitable to take apart what I have left and ship the boards alone or to ship the whole cellphones I have.

You may want to consider a shipping quote from fedex. There was a lot of discussion in the general discussion forum about shipping from the west coast and the best options that were brought up for shipping would be to ship a package no heavier than 68 pounds via fedex, or accumulating a huge volume of electronic scrap and shipping it on a pallet via a trucking company.

Sorry to hear that you got rooked, I hate those sleazes.

I pulled a handful of clean cell phone boards (below) and weighed them out. Those ten boards weigh 0.338 lbs.

Those ten cell phones without scraping would weight way over a pound. The smallest cell phones I've ever seen weight 2 ounces so you need only 8 to make a pound. There is a smart phone board there so those weight about 3.5 oz. Average flip phone weights about 2.5 oz

You get more money keeping the phones intact.

I agree...And, if he's got 82 lbs of good phones left, he's looking at stripping down over 500 phones, to recover less than 18 lbs of boards (using all the above numbers). That would take me more than a few football games and NASCAR races worth of time...

Here is a real sample. In the first pic the tiny cell phone weighs 1.34 oz. You'd need 12 of those for a pound = $4.50. In the second pic the board weighs 0.34 oz. You'd need 47 of this one to make a pound = $10.00

47 of these unscraped phones are about 3.9 lbs at $4.50 per lb = $17.71

So the labor will actually cost you money and hours and hours of wasted time.

Your ignoring the rest of the phone. Here's my every-part breakdown on an htc flyer.
in ounces

Motor .1
44c - 3c

Ag .1
$16/oz - $1.6

Green dlp .1
$5.75 -36c

Gold contact .1
65c - 4c

#2 .1
$2 - 1c

Lite wire .1
$1.6 - 1c

Gold wire .1
$10 - $1

Cell board 0.4
$10.5 -27c

Shred 0.6
5c - 1c

Gold recovery .1
$12/oz - $1.20

Flat.wire 0.5
6c -1c

Sheet aluminium .8
55c -27c

Screen 0.3
$1-2c

Stainless 300 series 0.8
40c - 2c

So I'm seeing $4.85
For the phone scrapped
Better than the whole phone price.
