This board has two small sockets and the rest of it is chips and slots? Large socket mobo? Telecom?

they have pictures of the most common types of boards there... you will find most of your answers there. And no, they do not upgrade mother boards based on chips unless it happens to have a gold capped chip.

Standard dual small socket mobo.

The only time a motherboard can jump class is if has gold cap chips or is some form of industrialized class (gold flashed fully or complete redundancy as in mini/mainframe boards or mmue rack servers).
