Pentium/Mac Ceramic Chip?
386/486?

Should I try to remove heat sink?

The AMD can go in 486. It's one of the flukes; an 80c486ix clone. Powerful little guy at the time!

The i960 is a Pentium class. It's the lowest grade 960 before they went to fibre chips.

I tried removing the small heat sink from one, but ended up breaking CPU in half. So I guess I answered my own question about that. :-)

Does the small heat sink effect the price, and will they still accept a CPU broke in half?

Yep, don't remove that cap. It's not a standard heatsink and you'll notice on the damaged one it's not totally flat either.
It's chromium carbide with aluminium it's higher at the edges.
Sorry I should have warned you. I feel terrible for not.
If you can keep all the pieces together in a baggy you can probably still get the 486 rate.

No worries, no need to feel terrible. :-)

Luckily it was a clean break into two pieces. I was about to take a torch to it (to possibly loosen it), glad I didn't, would have probably had two broken ones. haha

As long as boardsort is taking them with the cap on leave them alone.
;)
They're, the spreader cap, worth about $2.50-$2.75/lb so removing them is loosing money.
If for some reason you really want to take it off, such as for replacement etc.
Using thermal gloves.
The xacto cobalt handled blade holder
A #4 sickle blade
Heat the blade under an 85/15 map flame. And make small passes through the glue. I've never had the glue tested but it's some sort of petroleum based product.

Heating the cap itself won't work unless your hot enough to a) melt the gold off, and b, destabilise the crystalline structure of the CPU itself. And the fumes from the glue would be toxic if not deadly.
The spreader is designed to NOT heat evenly.

Wanted to update in case anyone else has problems removing one of these heatsinks. Ended up boiling the chips in water, and then twisting the heatsinks off, came off easy this way. This suggestion came from Chris.

Kind of defeats the premise of a working CPU. But yes that works too.
Never thought of that. Go Chris!
