I posted these a few weeks back and you said they were both peripheral.
I'm wondering why....the one with the white chips or CPUs (I'm not sure what they are) I think I understand why.....it's because of the lack of ic's?

The one with the red or rust colored I'm not sure I understand why.....is it because it doesn't have enough ic's?

the top one is differently peripheral

The lower one I'll modify my grade slightly and say large socket. See below.

Those server boards use a different material for the substrate and are considerably heavier per square inch than standard motherboards.

To make the telco class these boards need to have minimal, steel, flashing (gold silver copper etc), and full IC population,
Or
A gold sandwich layer.

In this case I believe you don't have enough IC population and I see no indication to believe it's a sandwich board.
I do however see 8 serial bus ports, two ceramic controllers, good IC population, flashing, and a giant bus socket on the edge, so large socket looks probable.

That's what I was thought about the first board.

Yes they are heavy boards they are pushing 1/8" thick or more.

I'm not sure what a buss socket is, but if I remember correctly they were plugged in to that large back plane in my other post.

What would I be looking for to see if it is a sandwich board?

Thanks again

The bus socket is what's on the edge of the board by your legs.

The easiest way to tell a sandwich board without experience and not ruining anything is to take a heavy duty utility knife and make a two inch long gouge in the centre of the board at about an 80 degree angle from vertical and see if there's a metal layer visible in scratch. Should look golden, silvery or red.

Hi rdw1121. I did receive telco rate for the board when I bought my shipment last month, although I did bring in about 550 lbs of telco boards might have influenced the price. The board is out of a cisco catalyst 6500 series.

Yeah 550#'s might have had some influence. I have some sure enough no questions asked telco, but no where near 550#'s. It sounds like I need to get confirmation from Chris.

Thanks for the heads up.

I wasn't sure what it was out of and I had no idea exactly what I was getting when I bid on this lot. I bought it thru an online auction about 4hrs from me and was guessing, well really gambling on a profit. Fortunately my gamble has / will off quite nicely.

Cisco did a lot of (beneficial not bad) cost cutting with their rack systems since day 1! They used only what was needed where it was needed. And you could find alot of the earliest Cisco units running today as the did when first booted.
Some of their node boards have enough gold to be sold directly to a refinery and get a nice profit out of it even on single boards. Others like the power distribution boards have so little value despite ICs and copper couplings you probably won't get a midgrade rate.
Yes you did very well and I'm jealous.
